Your Power as a Leader

You have power over your mentality — the diction you choose to use, the different perspectives you seek, and the way you advocate for yourself.

1.DICTION IS POWERFUL. The word “Can’t” shouldn’t exist. The best advice I ever received was to remove the word can’t from my vocabulary and replace it with can. Changing my diction changed the way I went about situations and built a strong sense of self-efficacy.

What do you think of when someone tells you, “Good Job!” Now, what if instead someone told you, “Good Effort!” One is rewarding the outcome, while the other is rewarding the input — the work you put into the outcome. By choosing to praise the input by saying “Good Effort,” people feel valued for their work/effort and can develop strong work ethics.

Always know the difference a word can make.

2. The playbook is simple: Take the blinders off. It’s invaluable to have the ability to see a situation from another perspective or point of view. Build a tribe of people that have different views than you, have mastered your weaknesses, and that you can learn from and add value to each other. Being open while genuinely listening and engaging with others will teach you more than any classroom. In school, you can learn more from your peers than your professors. Care about people as people, support those around you, and always encourage because putting good things out into the world (at least in my eyes) means the world will give you good back in fold.

“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it“ ~Paulo Coelho

3. You need to tell the “universe” your wants and desires for them to be achieved. Always advocate for yourself and your wants/needs/desires. You need to make them known. The most powerful thing you can do for yourself is advocate for yourself, know the value you bring to the table, and be prepared to achieve.

My leadership journey started by looking inside myself and the words I choose to use to looking to and learning from others in my tribe to then advocating for the change I want to see in the world.
